Help - Player's Profile and History

The player's Profile is accessed by clicking on their ECF Code. Among other things it shows their ratings from 2020 and all their grades going back to 1994. Grades were recalibrated in July 2009.

ECF Code

A 6-digit number followed by a letter. This is the code used to identify a player within the Rating Database. It is identical to the 'Ref' used until 2020 in the Grading Database.

Member / Class / Until

ECF Membership number, category and expiry date. These fields are frequently updated to reflect new and renewed Memberships. This includes the addition of brand new Members previously unknown to the database, though obviously they have no games as yet.

Ratings

Players may have a Standard or Rapid rating or both for Over-the-Board and Online. Additionally for Online there is a Blitz rating. For definitions of these terms, see here

The Revised Rating is shown for the current month. It is based on all reported games played in previous months. This rating may change from day to day; it will be re-calculated whenever more such games are reported. (Currently event reports and corrections are accepted from the past six months).

The Original Rating will never change. It is copied from the Revised Rating published on the first day of the stated month.

Revised ratings are official and will be used in future calculations. for the next rating list. For eligibility purposes, however, the ECF default position is to use Original September ratings throughout in its season-long Standardplay competitions. Other organisations may wish to do the same.

Category

The following categories apply to ratings in each list separately:

Category A: All ratings of players who have 30 or more rated results in the previous 12 calendar months

Category K: All ratings of players not qualifying as A with full active ratings that will be updated by the K-method

Category P: All ratings of players with active ratings that will be updated by the P-method. Such ratings are published but because of limited data; player's strength here should be assessed with wider evidence where available.

Unrated: Any K or P rating where the player has no rated result in the previous 36 calendar months, but see below. A returning player whose rating has expired will be treated as a new player with one dummy game assuming a draw against an opponent with the players last full rating if that is higher than the default rating.

These categories became effective on 1st February 2023.

Until the May 2022 list, grades/ratings were designated A-F with additional categories X and *. These operated with minor modifications over the whole history. The A category is broadly similar to the new A category. Thereafter ratings followed rules relating to the various averaging rules used in the grading calculations, working downwards to F being the least reliable. Category X was stronger than A and * sat below F. Between June 2022 and January 2023 some ratings were given category H; these ratings were for playing records that did not resolve clearly into either category K or P at transition. The new category P is considered a replacement for both the F and * categories.

Club Affiliation

This is not necessarily a club that the player belongs to. The ECF cannot know what clubs a player belongs to at any particular time.

Where a club (or County) name is followed by an asterisk (*), it denotes a location rather than a club.

Club Corrections

If the entry for your nominal club on the rating database shows a club affiliation which is different from the Club you wish to be shown, we would be happy to change this. In that case, please email The Rating Administrator (Matt Carr) at [email protected] indicating: your name, your rating reference, the nominal club currently shown, and the nominal club you wish to be shown. This change will take effect from the date of the next updating of ratings which usually occurs monthly.

Clubs Played

All clubs played for in the last 36 months will be listed. Most frequent first.

Clicking on a Club takes you to a list of players associated with that club. They can be listed in alphabetical order (click on 'Name'), in Rating order (for instance click on 'Standard' for the standard play order)

It is also possible to access a club (or county) by means of the Club lookup box. See here.

Games

The first figure is the number of games played in the 12 months leading up to the current rating. The second is the total number of games counted. It may be greater than the 12-month figure if games have been used from previous periods.

Rank

The player's rank (Standard or Rapid), excluding FIDE-registered players with nationality other than English.

Nation

Applicable only to FIDE-registered players this shows their Federation registered with FIDE.

FIDE

For FIDE-registered players this shows their FIDE code. Clicking on the Code takes you to the FIDE website, which gives the rating details.

Grade History

This is the player's history of published over-the-board ratings and grades back to 1994 (which is as far as available electronic records go). Online ratings commenced in November 2020.
